Gas, power and water at the install

# Gas connectors, conversion kits and the leak test: what happens at a gas hookup

A gas connector and leak test finish every gas appliance installation: a new design-certified flexible connector within the maker's length limit, a manual shutoff in the same room, the appliance's own regulator set for natural gas or converted with the maker's kit for propane, burner input reduced above 2,000 feet, and every joint brushed with a noncorrosive bubble solution, never tested with a flame.

## At a glance.

A gas appliance is joined to the house by a few feet of flexible tubing, a valve and a regulator, and the hookup is finished only when every joint has been proven tight. Knowing what each part is, and what the makers insist on, lets an owner follow the job and recognize a shortcut.

### Flexible connector New, design-certified, never reused

Whirlpool allows 4 to 5 ft for its cooking line; GE caps its laundry connector at 4 ft.

### Inlet pressure Natural gas 5 to 14 in. water column; propane 11 to 14

Whirlpool's figures for its freestanding gas models.

### High altitude Input cut 4% per 1,000 ft above 2,000 ft

Whirlpool and GE give the same rule.

### Leak test Bubble solution on every joint

GE: no open flame, and no ammonia in the solution.

## What sits between the gas pipe and the appliance

Four parts make the connection. A rigid gas pipe brings the supply to the location; Whirlpool asks for 3/4-inch pipe to a freestanding gas cooking appliance on natural gas, since a smaller pipe over a long run can starve the burners, and allows 1/2-inch as a minimum on propane. A manual shutoff valve sits on that pipe in the same room, outside the appliance opening, often in the adjacent cabinet. A flexible metal connector runs from the valve to the appliance, and the appliance's own pressure regulator takes it from there.

The connector is the part most often improvised. Whirlpool specifies a new design-certified flexible metal connector 4 to 5 feet long with a 1/2- or 3/4-inch inside diameter. GE's laundry instructions call for a listed connector no longer than 4 feet, and both print separate rules for Massachusetts, where Whirlpool's limit drops to 3 feet and a ball valve must have a T-handle.

- Rigid pipe to the location, sized for the run
- Manual shutoff in the same room, reachable without moving the appliance
- New flexible connector within the maker's length limit, not kinked when the appliance is pushed back
- Pipe-joint compound rated for propane on threaded joints; Whirlpool rules out PTFE tape on its cooking line

### Why the connector is always new

A flexible connector is corrugated metal that bends each time an appliance is pulled out and pushed back. GE's installation instructions state it plainly: use a new approved connector, never reuse old flexible connectors, and discard the old connector with the old ducting. Whirlpool's warning box opens with the same instruction. A connector that looks fine outside can be work-hardened or corroded along the folds where nobody can see.

## The appliance regulator and the pressure it expects

Household gas arrives at low pressure, measured in inches of water column. Whirlpool's instructions give 5 to 14 inches as the inlet range for natural gas and 11 to 14 inches for propane, and require the regulator supplied with the appliance to be used. GE asks for a qualified person to confirm propane pressure does not exceed 13 inches at its laundry machines, and for a plugged 1/8-inch test tapping just upstream of the connection so a gauge can be fitted.

The regulator is fragile in one particular way. Whirlpool warns that overtightening the connections at the regulator can crack it and cause a leak, and that the regulator must not be allowed to turn while the adapters are tightened. That is one reason the connection is made with two wrenches, one holding and one turning.

### Altitude changes the numbers

Burner ratings on the plate assume elevations up to 2,000 feet. Above that, Whirlpool and GE both reduce the input by 4 percent for each additional 1,000 feet. In a mountain home that adjustment is part of the installation, not a later repair, and it belongs in the records along with who made it.

### When the house line itself is being tested

If a plumber pressure-tests new gas piping above 1/2 psi, Whirlpool requires the appliance and its shutoff valve to be disconnected first. At 1/2 psi or less, closing the appliance's shutoff valve isolates it. Remodels that add a gas line after the appliance is in place are where this gets missed.

## Natural gas or propane: conversion kits and who fits them

The Whirlpool and GE models above leave the factory set for natural gas. The rating plate lists which gases the model can use, and Whirlpool's instructions forbid converting to a gas not on that plate without consulting the gas supplier. Converting a Whirlpool cooking appliance to propane means resetting its pressure regulator and changing the orifice at every burner, work its instructions reserve for a qualified installer or technician.

GE's gas laundry machine needs a maker-supplied propane conversion kit, identified by part number in its instructions, fitted by trained and qualified personnel under local codes. A kit meant for a different model, or a partial conversion that changes the orifices but not the regulator, leaves burners with flames of the wrong size and color, which is why the kit and the person fitting it both matter.

- Confirm the gas type at the house before ordering, not on delivery day
- Check the rating plate lists that gas
- Use the conversion kit the maker names for that model
- Have the conversion recorded, with the date and who did it

## The leak test: bubbles, never a flame

The gas connector and leak test belong together: once the valve is opened, every joint from the shutoff to the regulator is tested. GE's instructions call for a soapy solution brushed over each connection, never an open flame, and warn that the solution must not contain ammonia, which damages brass fittings. Whirlpool specifies an approved noncorrosive leak-detection solution: bubbles mean a leak, and a leak is corrected before anything else happens. GE's sequence for a leak is to close the valve, retighten the joint and test again.

Whirlpool also warns that gas leaks cannot always be detected by smell, which is why the bubble test is done on a joint that smells fine. After the test, its instructions have the oven run for 5 minutes and then checked for heat; a cold oven with the supply valve open is a reason to stop and call a technician.

## What the owner watches, and what the owner leaves alone

An owner's part in a gas hookup is to know where the shutoff is and how it looks when open. On Whirlpool's diagrams, the valve is open when its handle is parallel to the gas pipe and closed when it is across it. Ask to see the bubble test on each joint, and check that the connector is not folded or crushed once the appliance is pushed into place.

What stays with the installer is everything that opens the gas path: the connector nuts, the regulator, the orifices and any pressure measurement. That division is not about skill with a wrench; a joint disturbed by someone without a way to test it has no proof of being tight.

## Where to stop

If you smell gas at any point, do not light anything or touch switches, open windows on your way out, leave the house and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. An owner never loosens a connector, turns a regulator, swaps orifices or converts an appliance between natural gas and propane: book a visit for any of it, and keep the appliance shut off at its valve until the hookup has been tested.

## Step by step.

Five steps, in the order worth doing them.

01

### Supply ready

Rigid pipe and a manual shutoff valve are in place in the same room before delivery.

02

### Gas confirmed

The installer checks the rating plate against the house gas and fits the maker's conversion kit if needed.

03

### Connector fitted

A new certified connector goes on with rated compound, the regulator held still with a second wrench.

04

### Joints tested

The valve opens and every joint is brushed with bubble solution; any bubbles mean close, retighten and retest.

05

### Burners proven

Each burner lights, and the oven heats within 5 minutes before the appliance is pushed back onto its bracket.

For the heart of your home.

## Questions owners ask.

### Is a longer gas connector safer because it reaches without strain?

No. Makers set a maximum length, 4 to 5 feet on Whirlpool's cooking line and 4 feet on GE's laundry machines. A longer connector bunches behind the appliance, where it can kink or stop the appliance going fully back.

### Why not check for leaks with a lighter?

Because a flame can ignite the leak it is looking for. GE forbids it outright; a bubble solution without ammonia shows the same leak safely.

### The house runs on propane. Does that need a different appliance?

Usually the same model, converted with the maker's kit before first use. Check that the rating plate lists propane, and have a qualified installer carry out the conversion.

### Who makes the adjustment for a home at high elevation?

The installer or a technician, as part of the hookup. Whirlpool and GE reduce input by 4 percent for every 1,000 feet above 2,000 feet.
