# Appliance installation in Manhattan.

9 cities and neighborhoods across Manhattan, part of New York Metro — 6 with a page on what that place does to an appliance.

## What Manhattan does to an appliance.

Where appliances sit in Manhattan: tower living, older housing stock, tight openings and walk-ups.

### Tower living

A tower installation is booked around the freight elevator: the building sets the slot, the cab's inside depth decides whether a tall unit rides upright, and hall floors and walls are padded before the crate leaves the loading dock.

### Older housing stock

Older houses have narrow doors, tight stair turns and wood floors that give underfoot, so installing a new appliance there starts with the carry: doors lifted off their hinges, the floor covered and a dolly path chosen that spares the old trim.

### Tight openings and walk-ups

A compact laundry closet leaves almost no room behind a stacked pair, so the hoses, the drain and any duct are connected before the machines are pushed back, because nobody can reach behind them once they are in.

### Battery Park City

Battery Park City sits on landfill built up in the 1970s from more than 3 million cubic yards of soil and rock excavated for the World Trade Center and other Lower Manhattan projects.

### Greenwich Village

More than 50 blocks of Greenwich Village sit inside a Landmarks Preservation Commission historic district where redevelopment is severely restricted and any renovation must preserve a building's main facade.

### SoHo

Almost all of SoHo sits inside the SoHo–Cast Iron Historic District, landmarked by the city in 1973 and extended in 2010, covering about 500 buildings across 26 blocks.

### Tribeca

Tribeca's converted warehouses often have an elevator that opens straight into the loft, which makes the delivery easy, but the old structure and the building's rules can limit where a new vent or gas line may pass, so an installation there follows the routes the board has already approved.

### Upper East Side

Upper East Side prewar buildings bring appliances up a service elevator to the kitchen's back door, and a unit that would pass the front entrance may not fit that smaller cab, so an installation there measures the service route before the model is chosen.

### Upper West Side

The neighborhood's street grid runs on a diagonal where Broadway crosses the other avenues in its southern half, then straightens to run parallel to them above 78th Street, a layout that shapes how a block-by-block delivery route has to be planned.

Also covered in Manhattan

- **Chelsea** Chelsea borders Hudson Yards and the Garment District to the northeast and Hell's Kitchen to the northwest, a seam between several very different building types.
- **Gramercy** The opening of the Croton Aqueduct in 1842 let the townhouses then being built around Gramercy Park go up with indoor plumbing, sooner than much of the rest of the city could get it.
- **Midtown East** Midtown Manhattan is home to some of the city's most prominent buildings, including the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building and Grand Central Terminal, along with the headquarters of the United Nations.
