Windermere was founded in 1887 by Englishman John Dawe, who platted the community and named it after Windermere, a lake in England's Lake District. ## What Windermere does to an appliance. The town sits on an isthmus between Lake Down and Lake Butler and covers just 1.57 square miles, almost entirely land. In 2007 Windermere tried to annex the wealthy subdivisions of Isleworth and Butler Bay; Orange County objected over the property-tax revenue it stood to lose, and only Butler Bay was ultimately annexed after more than 90 percent of its residents approved by mail-in ballot.
