Del Mar was settled in 1882 by railroad official Theodore Loop after the California Southern Railroad's planned route passed through the area, and by 1888 it had grown to a village of about 25 homes along what is now 10th Street. ## What Del Mar does to an appliance. Colonel Jacob Taylor, who joined Loop to found the town in 1885, installed the first telephone line between Del Mar and Penasquitos so he could manage his ranch there while developing the coastal resort. The city incorporated in 1959 specifically to preserve its small-town feel, and the Del Mar Fairgrounds has hosted the San Diego County Fair since 1936 and horse racing since 1937.
