Floors are rarely flat, and almost no kitchen or laundry floor is level from wall to wall. Every appliance is built to make up for that with adjustable feet, rollers or leveling legs, and the installation is where they are set. When that step is rushed, or when the unit is set on its shipping height and pushed into place, it shows in small ways at first. A range rocks when a pot is set on a front burner, and oil pools to one side of a pan. A dish care machine sits with its top edge closer to the counter at one corner, so its door closes crooked. A refrigerator leans forward and its doors drift open instead of swinging shut. A washer rests on three feet and walks on the first spin. A wall oven or a built-in column looks subtly out of line with the cabinets around it. The correction is the job itself: each foot turned until the cabinet is level side to side and at the slope front to back its maker asks for, lock nuts tightened so the setting holds, and an anti-tip bracket checked again afterward, because raising a range's rear foot can lift it out of its bracket. The 6 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 Does the appliance rock when you press down on one front corner and then the other? 02 Does a spirit level, or a glass of water on a flat shelf, show a tilt to one side? 03 Does the gap between the unit and the counter or the cabinets change from one side to the other? 04 Is the floor under the unit tile, wood, vinyl or concrete, and was it laid after the cabinets? 05 Was the unit set in place at its shipping height, with its feet still screwed all the way in? ## Check these before you book. New appliance not level: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Press down on each front corner in turn and see whether the unit rocks. 02 Lay a spirit level across the top and then front to back, or set a glass of water on a flat shelf and watch the surface. 03 Look along the gap between the unit and the counter or the cabinets beside it. ### Also worth checking - Find the leveling legs or the front roller adjusters, usually behind the kick plate or at the bottom corners. - On a range, check that the rear foot still sits in the anti-tip bracket after any adjustment. ### How soon does it need a visit? An unlevel appliance can usually wait for a convenient visit. The low side's feet come out further, within the travel the maker allows, until the unit stands level. Level side to side, yes. From front to back, most models are set a little nose-up, so a released door drifts shut; the installation guide states the amount. ### Can shims under the feet level a laundry machine? Makers ask for the machine to stand on its own adjustable feet, locked in place, on a solid floor. Shims tend to slide out on the spin and are not a substitute for setting the feet correctly. ### Why did a unit that was level on delivery day lean a week later? A new floor, a vinyl surface or a platform can compress under the weight, and a loaded refrigerator is far heavier than an empty one. Checking the level again after the first week is part of a careful installation. ### Does leveling matter for an oven? It does. An oven or cooking surface that tilts makes cakes rise unevenly and lets oil run to one side of the pan.
