A door that closes flush is the last thing adjusted on an installation and the first thing an owner notices. On a new appliance it depends on a chain of settings, and any link can be off. The cabinet has to be level and, on cold storage, tilted slightly back. Hinges reversed on site have to be put back in the positions the manual shows, with every shim and cam where it was. A panel-ready door carries the weight of a cabinet panel, which has to be within the weight the hinges are made for and mounted at the right height. A dish care machine's door springs are set for its own door, and a heavy custom panel needs them adjusted. A refrigerator pushed tight into a cutout can have its door swing blocked by the cabinet beside it, and a thick handle can stop a door before it opens far enough to pull the drawers. When a cold storage door does not seal, the unit runs long and builds frost; when a dish care door does not seal, water finds its way out on the first cycle. Most of these are corrected by an adjustment, not a part. A hinge that cracked or a door that bent on the way is a claim to the seller or the maker, and a hinge that wears out later is work for our sister repair site. The 6 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 Does the door stand proud of the cabinets on the hinge side, the handle side or both? 02 Does it drift open by itself, or slam shut too hard? 03 Was the door swing reversed during the installation? 04 Is there a custom panel on the door, and how heavy is it? 05 Does the door seal pinch a sheet of paper evenly all the way around? ## Check these before you book. Door not closing flush: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Shut the door on a strip of paper at the top, the side and the bottom in turn, and feel for the same grip each time. 02 Look at the gap between this door and the cabinet doors beside it from a step back. 03 Lay a level on the top, first across and then from front to back. ### Also worth checking - Open the door fully and see whether it touches a wall, a handle or the cabinet next to it. - Keep the small hinge parts that came with the unit, and photograph any damage before calling. ### How soon does it need a visit? A door that closes but not perfectly can wait for a visit. The door is taken off, the parts are put in the order the manual shows, and it is rehung. Its brackets are adjusted in height, depth and side-to-side until the gaps match the doors around it. On most freestanding cold storage units, yes, and the parts come in the carton. Built-in and panel-ready models are often ordered with a fixed swing, so check the model before planning a change. ### How heavy can a custom door panel be? Each maker gives a maximum panel weight and thickness in the installation guide. A panel beyond that makes the door sag and the hinges wear, whatever the adjustment. ### Why does the freezer drawer close unevenly on a new unit? The slides may not be fully seated, a basket can be sitting on a packing block, or the cabinet is not level. Checking those three usually brings the drawer front back in line. ### Is a door that closes too hard a problem? A door that slams can shake bottles in the door bins and knock a panel out of line.
