Get out. Water, smoke or a trip? Power off Treat any gas smell that lingers after a hookup as a leak. Turn the burners and the appliance off, close the appliance shutoff if it is right there, make no flame and touch no switches, open windows, leave, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. The appliance is not used again until the hookup has been redone and leak-tested. ## What it usually means. Natural gas and propane are odorless as they come out of the ground, which is why suppliers blend in a sulfur compound that people notice at very low levels. When that odor appears in the hours or days after a new appliance was connected, the connection is the first suspect: a flare nut that was not tightened, a connector bent sharply when the unit was pushed back, a thread with the wrong sealant, a regulator on the appliance that was knocked in transit, or a valve that was opened with the old connector still loose on another outlet. A faint whiff right at first light, which clears in a second as the burner catches, is air and gas being purged from a new line. A smell that lingers, grows, or is there when every burner and the oven are off, is a leak until proved otherwise. Nobody in the house should search for it with a flame or a phone light near the connector, and nobody should try to tighten the fitting: the order is out of the house first, then a call from outside to the gas utility or 911. Once the utility has made the house safe, the hookup is redone with a new connector and every joint is retested before the appliance is used. The 6 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 Is the smell there with every burner, the oven and the dryer off, or only for a moment when a burner lights? 02 Is it strongest behind the new appliance, near the floor, or through the whole room? 03 Was the appliance connected today, or has it been in use for a few days before the smell began? 04 Can you hear a hiss behind the unit, without moving closer to it? 05 Is the appliance on propane, and was a conversion kit fitted before it was lit? ## Check these before you book. A smell that is gone once every burner has lit steadily is normal; one that stays is not, and it is treated as a leak. It is replaced with one of the right length and routed without tight bends. Sealant on a flare, or bare threads at the valve, can seep. The joint is taken apart, cleaned and made up correctly, then retested. Can I tighten the fitting myself? No. Working on a gas joint with gas in the air risks a spark, and a joint that leaks once needs to be taken apart and remade, not squeezed tighter. Leave the house, call from outside, and let the utility make it safe first. ### Is a short smell when a burner lights a leak? A second or two of odor as a burner catches is normal, especially in the first days while air leaves a new line. If it hangs in the room after the flame is steady, or when everything is off, treat it as a leak. ### Will the gas utility come out for a smell after a new hookup? Yes. Utilities treat a reported gas odor as an emergency whatever caused it, and they will shut the supply off at the appliance or the meter until the connection is corrected. ### Does a gas detector replace the leak test on the joints?
