A new ice maker is slower to start than most people expect, and that alone explains many calls. The freezer has to reach its working temperature before the ice maker's thermostat allows a harvest, and the first full bin can take a day or more. Many models ship with the ice maker switched off, or with a wire arm raised or a sensor paused, so it stays idle until someone turns it on in the menu or lowers the arm. Beyond the waiting, the water path is the usual suspect. A stop valve opened only partway, a saddle valve whose needle never pierced the pipe fully, or a supply line kinked behind a unit pushed into its opening starves the fill. New filters hold air, and some need to be flushed with several gallons before water flows freely through them; a filter bypass plug left out, or a filter not fully turned into its housing, stops the flow entirely. Low house pressure, or a reverse osmosis system feeding the line, can leave the fill too weak to trip the valve. An ice maker harness left unplugged at the back of the freezer after a door swap is common too. Ice maker not filling after the install: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Give the unit a full day after it reaches temperature before judging the ice maker. 02 Check that the ice maker is switched on in the controls and that nothing is blocking its arm or sensor. 03 Dispense water: a weak or sputtering flow points to the valve, the line or the filter. ### Also worth checking - Make sure the filter is turned fully into its housing, and flush it as the manual describes. - Look behind the unit, without pulling on the line, for a kink where it meets the inlet. ### How soon does it need a visit? An ice maker that is not filling can wait. Many makers also suggest discarding the first batches while the line clears. The valve is opened fully or replaced with a quarter-turn stop and the flow checked. The unit is pulled out, the line rerouted with a loose coil, and set back without trapping it. It is reconnected with the power off; an ice maker that still stays idle goes to the maker's warranty. Often most of a day after the freezer reaches temperature, and a full bin can take longer. The first few batches may be small or cloudy and are usually thrown away. ### Does a reverse osmosis system affect the ice maker? It can. Many systems deliver water at lower pressure than the ice maker's valve needs, and some makers give a minimum pressure in the installation manual. A booster or a direct line may be needed. ### Why is the first ice cloudy or small? Air and fine particles in a new line and filter make the first cubes cloudy, and a freezer still cooling down makes them thin. Both clear up within the first few days. ### Should the ice maker be switched off if there is no water line yet? Yes. Running it with no water supply can make its valve and fill motor cycle with nothing to do.
