Heavy appliances do not all come ready to plug in. Many electric ranges and dryers ship without a cord at all, because the right one depends on the receptacle in the house: a three-slot receptacle from older construction or a four-slot one that newer electrical codes call for. Fitting the matching cord, with the ground strap set the way the manual says for that cord, is part of the installation. The mismatch goes further in other cases. A new induction range or a larger electric dryer may need a heavier circuit than the old one, and its plug is made so that it will not fit a smaller receptacle, which is exactly the protection intended. A gas range needs an ordinary household receptacle for its igniters and clock, which may not exist behind an old model that had none. A built-in cold storage unit or a wall oven may need the receptacle in a particular spot, or a hard-wired junction box. And a dish care machine may come with a cord where the house has a hard-wired connection, or the reverse. Adapters, extension cords and a forced plug are never the answer. The cord is matched to the receptacle where that is safe; a new receptacle or a new circuit is an electrician's work. The 6 causes, cheapest first Answer these first 01 How many prongs does the plug have, and how many slots does the receptacle have? 02 Did the appliance arrive with a cord, or with an open terminal block at the back? 03 What does the nameplate list for voltage and amperage, and what is the breaker rated for? 04 Is the receptacle in a place the new unit's cord can reach once it is set in its opening? 05 Was the old appliance hard-wired, gas, or on a different kind of plug? ## Check these before you book. Plug does not fit the outlet: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything. 01 Count the prongs on the plug and the slots in the receptacle, and photograph both. 02 Read the nameplate for the voltage and amperage, and the rating on the breaker for that circuit. 03 Look at the back of a range or dryer: an open terminal block means a cord still has to be fitted. ### Also worth checking - Do not use an adapter, an extension cord or a forced plug. - Book the installation, and an electrician if the circuit or the receptacle has to change. ### How soon does it need a visit? Nothing here is urgent as long as the appliance stays unplugged. The nameplate and the breaker are compared, and an electrician adds the circuit before the installation goes on. No installation: check it yourself 2. 02 no installation ### No receptacle behind a new gas appliance Gas ranges and dryers still need an ordinary receptacle for their igniters, controls and lights. If none sits within reach of the cord, an electrician adds one before the hookup. No installation: check it yourself 3. 03 low ### No cord on the terminal block Many models ship with a terminal block and no cord. A three-wire or four-wire cord matching the receptacle is fitted, the ground strap is set as the manual says, and the strain relief is tightened. Where local code allows it, the cord is changed to suit; a new four-slot receptacle is an electrician's work. One that lands behind the unit's body blocks it from going home; an electrician moves it. It is connected the way the maker supports for that model, with power off at the breaker. Electric dryers and ranges are often sold without one because homes have either a three-slot or a four-slot receptacle. The matching cord is bought and fitted at the installation. ### Is a three-prong cord on a four-slot receptacle ever acceptable? No. The cord is always matched to the receptacle. A four-slot receptacle takes a four-wire cord, with the ground strap set as the manual shows for that cord. ### Can a gas cooking appliance work without a receptacle? Most need power for their igniters, clock, oven controls and lights. Some cooktop burners can be lit by hand in an outage, but the appliance is designed to be plugged in. ### Who adds a new receptacle or circuit?
