An anti-tip bracket and leveling visit handles the two steps that make an appliance safe to lean on and steady to use, and that are skipped more often than any other. Freestanding and slide-in ranges ship with an anti-tip bracket because an open oven door can act as a step, and a range without its bracket can tip forward onto whoever is standing there. The bracket is screwed to the floor or the wall at the spot the template shows, into wood or with anchors suited to concrete or tile, and then the range is slid back until its rear leg sits fully inside the bracket. That engagement is the part that matters, and it is tested by trying to tilt the range forward gently. Tall cold storage units and some laundry pairs have their own straps or brackets. Leveling follows. Each foot is turned until the cabinet sits level side to side and at the slope front to back the maker asks for, which on a refrigerator is often a slight lean backward so the doors close on their own. Washers are set so all four feet carry weight and the lock nuts are tightened. Dishwashers are leveled so the door closes square with the counter. Everything is checked again with a spirit level before the visit ends.
