What Alameda County does
to an appliance.

Where appliances sit in Alameda County: older housing stock, cutouts and panel-ready fits, mixed housing.

All of San Francisco Bay Area

Older housing stock

An old kitchen's gas stub, water valve and outlet were placed for appliances of another era, and fitting a new unit there often calls for a longer connector or a moved valve, with any new line or circuit left to a licensed plumber or electrician first.

Cutouts and panel-ready fits

Panel-ready units arrive without their fronts, and fitting them means mounting the cabinetmaker's panels to the maker's template, setting the hinges for the panel's weight and lining up the reveals with the cabinet doors around them.

Mixed housing

A buyer moving into an older house with appliances of mixed ages often replaces them one at a time, and each installation there notes what the next will need, a new circuit, a longer duct or a wider opening, so later work is planned ahead.

Piedmont

Piedmont is a separate incorporated city entirely enclaved by Oakland, so despite sitting inside Oakland's borders it runs its own municipal government and, since becoming a charter city in 1922, its own charter.

Alameda

Alameda's population reached 78,280 at the 2020 census, and the Ohlone people who lived on this land for more than 3,000 years left oyster-shell mounds across the peninsula, some as tall as 14 feet.

Berkeley

Berkeley is named for the 18th-century Anglo-Irish bishop and philosopher George Berkeley, and its eastern border with Contra Costa County generally follows the ridge of the Berkeley Hills.

Castro Valley

At the 2020 census, Castro Valley was the fourth most populous unincorporated area in all of California, with 66,441 residents and no city hall of its own.

Dublin

Dublin took its name in the 1890s from the many Irish residents who had settled the area, at a spot along today's Interstate 580 and 680 first called Alamilla Springs.

Fremont

Fremont's largest employer is a Tesla manufacturing plant with about 25,000 workers as of 2024, in a city formed in 1956 by unifying five older towns, including Mission San Jose, Centerville, Niles, Irvington and Warm Springs.

Livermore

Livermore is the most populous city in the Tri-Valley, and the chemical element livermorium is named for the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory headquartered there.

Montclair

Montclair sits within a mapped seismic zone that shaped the valley where the neighborhood shopping district now sits at 640 feet of elevation.

Pleasanton

Pleasanton was ranked the wealthiest mid-sized city in the country by the Census Bureau in both 2005 and 2007, and although Oakland is the Alameda County seat, some county offices sit in Pleasanton instead.

Rockridge

Rockridge sits at 187 feet of elevation, and Money Magazine listed it as one of the best places to live in the country in 2002.
