What the drain and air gap connection
involves.

A drain and air gap connection makes sure the water a new appliance pumps out goes one way only: down the drain and never back. On a dishwasher or dish drawer, the drain hose climbs to a high loop fastened under the counter or to a countertop air gap, as local code requires, then drops to the disposer inlet or to a branch tailpiece on the sink drain. If the disposer is new, its knockout plug is removed first. The hose clamp is tightened on the barb, and the hose is routed so the machine can slide in without flattening it. On a washer, the drain hose goes into a standpipe or a laundry tub at the height the maker gives, secured so it cannot jump out when the pump pushes, and never sealed airtight into the pipe, which would siphon the tub. A built-in ice maker with a gravity drain needs a drain below it with the right fall, or a drain pump where there is none. A condensing or heat pump dryer may drain to the standpipe too. Each drain is proved on a first cycle: the water leaves quickly, nothing backs into the sink, nothing drips under the cabinet.

How the visit goes

Drain and air gap connection,
step by step.

Run a first drain and check the sink, the standpipe and the cabinet floor while it pumps.

01

Look at the existing drain: disposer, tailpiece, standpipe, laundry tub or floor drain, and its height and condition.

02

Fit the high loop, the air gap or the standpipe connection that local code and the maker ask for.

03

Remove the knockout plug in a new disposer's dishwasher inlet, and clamp the hose onto its barb.

04

Route the hose so the appliance can be set in place without kinking or crushing it.

05

Run a first drain and check the sink, the standpipe and the cabinet floor while it pumps.

Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Which appliance is going in, and what its drain will connect to
  2. Whether the disposer, the sink or the countertop is new since the last machine
  3. Whether your city asks for an air gap on dish care drains, if you know
  4. Any history of slow sink drains or gurgling, since a partly blocked drain line shows up on the first cycle

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

On a Tampa Bay slab the new dish care machine's drain hose usually shares the sink's tailpiece, and a drain connection there sets a high loop or an air gap as the local code and the maker ask, so wastewater cannot siphon back into the tub.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

Two-story Orlando houses often carry the laundry up beside the bedrooms, and a drain connection there secures the washer hose in its standpipe at the height the maker gives, then checks that the pan beneath the machine drains where it should.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

In South Florida condos a new dish care machine drains into plumbing that serves the floors below, and a drain connection there fits the air gap or high loop cleanly, since a backup in a tower becomes a neighbor's problem quickly.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

Older New York apartments may have one narrow sink drain for everything, and a drain connection for a new 18-inch dish care machine there checks that the tailpiece branch is clear and the hose climbs high enough under the counter before it drops.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston garage laundries tend to have a standpipe set into an outside wall, and a drain connection for a new washer there confirms its height and diameter match the maker's range, since a pipe too low can empty the drum mid-fill.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

Chicagoland basement laundries usually empty into a utility sink or a drain in the concrete floor, and a drain connection there hooks the new hose firmly so it cannot jump out during a spin, and confirms that the pump can lift water to the tub's rim.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

A drain connection for a new dish care machine in a Los Angeles remodel often meets a countertop air gap the city's inspectors expect, and the technician fits the hose to it cleanly rather than looping under the sink alone.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

In San Diego's smaller cottages and garage units a drain connection for a compact washer may run to a laundry sink or a new standpipe, and the hose is set to the height the maker names so the drum drains fully on every spin.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area remodels often add a new disposal along with the new dish care machine, and a drain connection there knocks out the plug inside the disposal's inlet before the hose is clamped on, a small step that otherwise leaves water standing after the first load.

Questions about
the drain and air gap connection.

What is the difference between a high loop and an air gap?
A high loop raises the hose to the underside of the counter so sink water cannot run back into the machine. An air gap is a small fitting on the counter or sink deck that breaks the line with open air, which some local codes require instead.
Why must the laundry drain hose not be sealed into the standpipe?
A tight seal turns the hose and the standpipe into a siphon. Water drains out of the tub while it is still filling, and the machine may never finish its cycle. The gap around the hose lets air in and stops that.
Does an ice maker set into the cabinetry always need a floor drain?
Models with a gravity drain do, and the drain must sit lower than the unit's outlet. Where there is none nearby, many makers offer a drain pump version or a pump kit that lifts the water to the sink drain.
