What DUMBO does
to an appliance.

The neighborhood's streets are paved in Belgian block, a holdover from its industrial waterfront days that can slow rolling equipment across a curb.

A rail line called the Jay Street Connecting Railroad once ran through Dumbo's waterfront with spurs into several buildings, and its tracks are still visible embedded in some streets today.

Tower living

A tower installation is booked around the freight elevator: the building sets the slot, the cab's inside depth decides whether a tall unit rides upright, and hall floors and walls are padded before the crate leaves the loading dock.

Older housing stock

Older houses have narrow doors, tight stair turns and wood floors that give underfoot, so installing a new appliance there starts with the carry: doors lifted off their hinges, the floor covered and a dolly path chosen that spares the old trim.

On the water

Houses near the ocean or a bay are often built or rebuilt above flood level, so a new appliance may climb an outside stair or ride a small lift to reach the kitchen, and the delivery is planned around that climb.

When an appliance
cannot wait in DUMBO.

In DUMBO as anywhere, these five signs follow a connection that is not safe to run on, so the new appliance stays off until the hookup is put right: gas in the air after the gas connector went on, water on the floor after a supply or drain connection, a burning smell or a tripped breaker on the very first run, and a laundry exhaust that is crushed, pulled loose or blowing lint into the room.
