Appliance installation in Forest Hills.

Forest Hills Gardens has private streets under its own community corporation, so even a delivery truck there follows the Gardens' arrangements, while the apartment buildings along Queens Boulevard book service elevators ahead for any new appliance.

What Forest Hills does
to an appliance.

Forest Hills' single-family homes were built by the Cord Meyer Development Company starting in 1906 on land assembled from six former farms, with the neighborhood's roads laid out by 1910.

Many houses in the Forest Hills Gardens section are Tudor Revival, with stucco walls and red clay tile roofs, and a large share of that section was built with a prefabricated technique: each house went up from about 170 standardized precast concrete panels made off-site.

The widening of Queens Boulevard through the neighborhood in the 1920s and 1930s, together with the opening of the subway's Queens Boulevard Line, reshaped the streets around the original 1906 layout.

Mixed housing

A buyer moving into an older house with appliances of mixed ages often replaces them one at a time, and each installation there notes what the next will need, a new circuit, a longer duct or a wider opening, so later work is planned ahead.

Family houses

Where children are in the house, no cooking unit is set in place without its anti-tip bracket, and an installation there fixes the bracket, engages the leg and tests it by tilting the unit gently forward before the crew leaves.

Tight openings and walk-ups

Walk-up apartments and narrow halls often choose the model before the kitchen does, so a 24-inch or counter-depth unit is picked to make the turn at the landing, and its doors or handles come off for the carry and go back on in place.

When an appliance
cannot wait in Forest Hills.

In Forest Hills as anywhere, these five signs follow a connection that is not safe to run on, so the new appliance stays off until the hookup is put right: gas in the air after the gas connector went on, water on the floor after a supply or drain connection, a burning smell or a tripped breaker on the very first run, and a laundry exhaust that is crushed, pulled loose or blowing lint into the room.
