What Battery Park City does
to an appliance.
Its residential blocks are entirely high-rise towers of 20 to 45 stories, divided into northern and southern sections by the Brookfield Place complex, so any delivery runs through a building's loading dock and freight elevator.
The neighborhood is built on state-owned land run by the Battery Park City Authority, a public-benefit corporation, rather than by a private landlord or a resident co-op board.
It is bounded by the Hudson River on the west, north and south, with West Street its only landward edge.

A tower installation is booked around the freight elevator: the building sets the slot, the cab's inside depth decides whether a tall unit rides upright, and hall floors and walls are padded before the crate leaves the loading dock.
Newer developments
Homeowners associations in planned communities can set rules on delivery hours, truck parking and outside vent caps, and an installation there is scheduled and fitted to follow them.
On the water
Houses near the ocean or a bay are often built or rebuilt above flood level, so a new appliance may climb an outside stair or ride a small lift to reach the kitchen, and the delivery is planned around that climb.

When an appliance
cannot wait in Battery Park City.
In Battery Park City as anywhere, these five signs follow a connection that is not safe to run on, so the new appliance stays off until the hookup is put right: gas in the air after the gas connector went on, water on the floor after a supply or drain connection, a burning smell or a tripped breaker on the very first run, and a laundry exhaust that is crushed, pulled loose or blowing lint into the room.
