Close view inside the space behind a new refrigerator pulled out from its opening, a technician's hands seen from the wrists down threading a new braided stainless supply line onto a chrome quarter-turn stop valve on the wall, a folded dry towel on the floor under the valve, soft daylight from the kitchen.

What the water supply and shutoff connection
involves.

A water supply and shutoff connection gives a new appliance a clean start on its water: a stop valve you can close, and a line from that valve to the appliance's inlet that is new, the right length and made for the job. It applies to refrigerators and freezers with a dispenser or an ice maker, built-in and freestanding ice makers, steam ovens that plumb in, dishwashers and dish drawers, and washers. The existing valve is tried first. An old multi-turn valve that will not close fully, or a saddle valve clamped onto a copper pipe, is noted and, where it can be done at the existing stub, replaced with a quarter-turn stop; moving or adding a water line inside the wall is a plumber's work. Lines are braided stainless or copper as the maker asks, never cracked plastic tubing carried over from the old unit. Washer hoses are new, with their rubber washers seated. A refrigerator or ice maker line is flushed through before it is connected, to clear air and loose particles, and any new water filter is flushed as the manual describes. Then the valve is opened slowly, every joint is dried and watched under pressure, and the appliance is filled once while the connections stay in view.

How the visit goes

Water supply and shutoff connection,
step by step.

Run a first fill or dispense cycle with the connections in view, and show you where to close the water.

01

Close the house or fixture valve, and check whether the existing stop valve shuts off fully.

02

Replace a failing or saddle-type valve with a quarter-turn stop where the existing pipe allows it.

03

Fit a new braided or copper supply line of the right length, with no kinks and no strain on the inlet.

04

Flush the line and any new filter, then open the valve slowly and watch every joint under pressure.

05

Run a first fill or dispense cycle with the connections in view, and show you where to close the water.

4 of them, from water leak after an install: close the supply valve first to appliance installation code on a new unit: setup modes and hookup messages.

All problems
A kitchen floor in front of a newly installed dishwasher, its kick plate removed and leaning against the cabinet, a small spreading pool of clear water on light wood flooring below the open toe space, a folded dry towel lying nearby untouched, the sink cabinet door open beside it with a chrome stop valve visible, seen low from across the room. Before you call

Tell us this when you book

  1. Which appliance needs water, and whether its old line and valve are still in place
  2. Where the shutoff is, under the sink, behind the unit or in the basement, and whether it closes
  3. The distance from the valve to where the new unit will stand, if you know it
  4. Whether the house has a softener, a whole-house filter or a reverse osmosis system feeding the kitchen

All service areas

Tampa BayFL · 31 areas

Tampa Bay houses on slabs often route the water line for a new ice maker through the attic or along a baseboard, so a water supply connection there finds the nearest shutoff first and adds a proper valve if the old saddle tap is all that is left.

OrlandoFL · 30 areas

In Orlando rental homes a water supply connection is planned around guests, with a quarter-turn shutoff placed where a property manager can reach it and a braided line that will not kink when the new refrigerator is pushed back.

Miami / South FloridaFL · 47 areas

South Florida towers stack kitchens directly above one another, so a water supply connection there uses a new braided line and a shutoff the owner can close from the front of the cabinet, and the joint is watched through a full fill before the crew leaves.

New York MetroNY · 75 areas

In New York a water supply connection may depend on a building engineer, because apartments often lack their own shutoff and a riser has to be closed for the whole line, so the job is booked for the hour the building allows.

HoustonTX · 36 areas

Houston laundries out in the garage often have supply valves that sat unused for years, and a water supply connection there opens and closes each one before the new hoses go on, replacing a valve that will not seal.

ChicagoIL · 50 areas

A basement laundry in Chicagoland usually has its supply valves on bare pipe above a laundry tub, and a water supply connection there fits new hoses to the new washer, turns the valves slowly and watches every joint through a full fill.

Los AngelesCA · 95 areas

Los Angeles kitchens remodeled in stages often hide the refrigerator's water valve behind a cabinet that was later closed off, so a water supply connection there locates it, or asks for a reachable one, before the new unit is pushed into place.

San DiegoCA · 31 areas

When a San Diego garage conversion gets its own kitchen, a water supply connection there often ties into lines a plumber has just run, and the technician checks each new shutoff under pressure before any appliance is attached to it.

San Francisco Bay AreaCA · 74 areas

Bay Area flats stacked over garages often have the ice maker's water line running up from below, and a water supply connection there traces it to its valve in the garage so the owner knows where to close it later.

Questions about
the water supply and shutoff connection.

What is wrong with a saddle valve on the ice maker line?
A saddle valve clamps onto a pipe and pierces it with a needle. Its packing and its rubber seal age, and it often weeps or clogs. Many plumbing codes no longer accept it, and a quarter-turn stop is the better choice.
Why is the new line flushed before it is connected?
New and disturbed lines hold air and loose bits of scale. Running a few quarts through a bucket first keeps that out of the inlet valve and the filter, and the first ice or water tastes better.
Are braided hoses on the laundry machine enough to prevent a flood?
They resist bursting far better than plain rubber, but they still age. Closing the valves when you are away for a long time, and a leak sensor on the floor behind the machine, add protection.
