Appliance installation in Russian Hill.

Many of Russian Hill's streets, including portions of Vallejo and Green Streets, are staircases rather than roads because of the hill's steepness.

What Russian Hill does
to an appliance.

Lombard Street's switchback turns were built in 1922 at property owner Carl Henry's suggestion, to reduce the hill's natural 27 percent grade, which was too steep for most vehicles to climb.

The 1853 Atkinson House is one of the few homes in the neighborhood to survive the 1906 earthquake; most other Russian Hill residents had to rebuild afterward.

Tower living

Many condo buildings want a certificate of insurance and a written approval before a new laundry pair or a vented machine goes in, so that paperwork is filed with the manager well ahead of the installation date.

Tight openings and walk-ups

In a small kitchen a new unit's depth matters as much as its width, and an installation there checks that its doors swing past the counter edge and the neighboring handles, since a model a few inches too deep can block a walkway or a drawer.

Older housing stock

Historic districts often review changes to a house's outside walls, so a new hood cap or laundry vent may need approval before a hole is cut, and an installation there tries the existing openings first.

When an appliance
cannot wait in Russian Hill.

In Russian Hill as anywhere, these five signs follow a connection that is not safe to run on, so the new appliance stays off until the hookup is put right: gas in the air after the gas connector went on, water on the floor after a supply or drain connection, a burning smell or a tripped breaker on the very first run, and a laundry exhaust that is crushed, pulled loose or blowing lint into the room.
