San Francisco, San Francisco Bay Area
Appliance installation in Marina.
Marina buildings from the 1920s and 1930s were not drawn for today's appliances, and fitting one there often means a counter-depth or 24-inch unit through a narrow entry, with the building's rules on laundry machines read before a pair is bought.

What Marina does
to an appliance.
Much of the Marina District is built on landfill placed after the 1906 earthquake, first from earthquake rubble and then mostly from mud and sand dredged off the bay floor to build up the site for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition.
That fill is susceptible to soil liquefaction in a strong earthquake, a vulnerability that caused extensive damage across the neighborhood during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.
The neighborhood was developed for housing only after the 1915 exposition closed, when private developers demolished nearly all of the fair's structures except the Palace of Fine Arts.
Also known as Marina District.
All of San Francisco Bay AreaTight openings and walk-ups
In a small kitchen a new unit's depth matters as much as its width, and an installation there checks that its doors swing past the counter edge and the neighboring handles, since a model a few inches too deep can block a walkway or a drawer.
On the water
Houses near the ocean or a bay are often built or rebuilt above flood level, so a new appliance may climb an outside stair or ride a small lift to reach the kitchen, and the delivery is planned around that climb.
Tower living
A tower installation is booked around the freight elevator: the building sets the slot, the cab's inside depth decides whether a tall unit rides upright, and hall floors and walls are padded before the crate leaves the loading dock.

When an appliance
cannot wait in Marina.
In Marina as anywhere, these five signs follow a connection that is not safe to run on, so the new appliance stays off until the hookup is put right: gas in the air after the gas connector went on, water on the floor after a supply or drain connection, a burning smell or a tripped breaker on the very first run, and a laundry exhaust that is crushed, pulled loose or blowing lint into the room.
