Appliance installation in Pasadena.

Pasadena bungalows were built with small kitchens and narrow doors, and an installation there often means a slimmer model, doors taken off their hinges for the carry and a gas connector long enough to reach a stub set for a much older unit.

What Pasadena does
to an appliance.

Pasadena incorporated on June 19, 1886, one of the first cities to do so in what is now Los Angeles County, and it had a public library even before that.

The city created its own Pasadena Municipal Light and Power Department in 1906, began serving commercial customers in 1908, and bought out Southern California Edison's Pasadena operations in 1920, giving the city a municipal electric utility that most of the rest of the county does not have.

That department, now Pasadena Water and Power, still runs the roughly 110-year-old Glenarm Power Plant and serves an area of about 23 square miles that reaches beyond the city limits into unincorporated Altadena and East Pasadena.

The Gamble House, built in 1908 by architects Charles and Henry Greene as their idea of an ultimate bungalow, is an American Craftsman landmark from the same era that shaped much of the city's older housing stock.

All of Los Angeles

Older housing stock

Older houses have narrow doors, tight stair turns and wood floors that give underfoot, so installing a new appliance there starts with the carry: doors lifted off their hinges, the floor covered and a dolly path chosen that spares the old trim.

Mixed housing

Where a house has been added onto over the years, the laundry or kitchen may sit in an addition with its own gas and water branches, and an installation there traces which branch serves the new unit before connecting it.

Family houses

Growing families often move up to a larger laundry pair or a wider cold storage unit, and an installation there checks that the bigger model clears the doorway and the closet and still reaches the connections that served the old one.

When an appliance
cannot wait in Pasadena.

In Pasadena as anywhere, these five signs follow a connection that is not safe to run on, so the new appliance stays off until the hookup is put right: gas in the air after the gas connector went on, water on the floor after a supply or drain connection, a burning smell or a tripped breaker on the very first run, and a laundry exhaust that is crushed, pulled loose or blowing lint into the room.
