What SoHo does
to an appliance.

Many of the district's side streets are still paved in Belgian block rather than smooth asphalt, a surface that can make rolling a hand truck or an appliance dolly to a doorway slower than on a standard street.

SoHo's cast-iron buildings were built for 19th-century manufacturing and warehousing use before being converted into the residential lofts that now fill the district.

Older housing stock

Older houses have narrow doors, tight stair turns and wood floors that give underfoot, so installing a new appliance there starts with the carry: doors lifted off their hinges, the floor covered and a dolly path chosen that spares the old trim.

Tower living

A tower installation is booked around the freight elevator: the building sets the slot, the cab's inside depth decides whether a tall unit rides upright, and hall floors and walls are padded before the crate leaves the loading dock.

Tight openings and walk-ups

In a small kitchen a new unit's depth matters as much as its width, and an installation there checks that its doors swing past the counter edge and the neighboring handles, since a model a few inches too deep can block a walkway or a drawer.

When an appliance
cannot wait in SoHo.

In SoHo as anywhere, these five signs follow a connection that is not safe to run on, so the new appliance stays off until the hookup is put right: gas in the air after the gas connector went on, water on the floor after a supply or drain connection, a burning smell or a tripped breaker on the very first run, and a laundry exhaust that is crushed, pulled loose or blowing lint into the room.
