What Cook County does
to an appliance.
Where appliances sit in Cook County: older housing stock, cutouts and panel-ready fits, mixed housing.
All of ChicagoOlder housing stock
Older houses have narrow doors, tight stair turns and wood floors that give underfoot, so installing a new appliance there starts with the carry: doors lifted off their hinges, the floor covered and a dolly path chosen that spares the old trim.
Cutouts and panel-ready fits
Built-in columns and pro-style cooking units are heavy and tall, so they are anchored to the cabinetry or the wall as the maker specifies, and each unit's toe-kick ventilation is left open rather than closed off by trim.
Mixed housing
Where a century-old house and last decade's rebuild share a block, installing an appliance can mean a wide garage door on one lot and a narrow back stair on the next, so every delivery path is measured on its own.

in Cook County.

Glencoe
Glencoe developed in the late 19th century around a railroad stop, the same pattern that shaped much of the rest of the North Shore.
Gold Coast
The Gold Coast splits into two kinds of installation: a townhouse on the landmark blocks, where a new unit climbs a narrow stair to a kitchen on an upper floor, and a tower apartment, where water to an ice maker or a washer comes off a shared riser that the building engineer closes before the hookup.
Lakeview
Lakeview's courtyard apartments often have small kitchens fitted into old layouts, and an installation there often calls for a compact model and a delivery path through a narrow back stair rather than the front entrance.
Lincoln Park
Lincoln Park greystones turned back into single homes often have kitchens rebuilt at the rear, and deliveries there come through the alley and the back yard, where a garage, a gate and a back stair decide what size of unit can reach the kitchen.
Near North Side
The Gold Coast Historic District, part of the Near North Side, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on January 30, 1978.
Oak Park
Many of Oak Park's Prairie-era and Victorian houses put the kitchen at the back behind a narrow rear porch and pantry door, and an installation there measures that back route, which is often easier than carrying a unit through the front rooms, and checks how far the old gas stub reaches.
River Forest
River Forest is closely tied to neighboring Oak Park and is known for its concentration of early-20th-century residential architecture, including several Frank Lloyd Wright designs within the Prairie School style.
West Loop / Near West Side
An Italian immigrant community developed in the Near West Side in the late 19th century, part of the wave of settlement that filled in the neighborhood's older housing stock.
Wilmette
Wilmette was officially incorporated as a village on September 19, 1872, at a house on Greenleaf Avenue.
Winnetka
Winnetka's Tudor Revival houses often reach the kitchen through a side door and a butler's pantry and keep the laundry in the basement, so an installation there plans two routes, the side door for a cooking unit and the basement stair for a new pair, and checks each against the crated size.
