What it
usually means.
A door that closes flush is the last thing adjusted on an installation and the first thing an owner notices. On a new appliance it depends on a chain of settings, and any link can be off. The cabinet has to be level and, on cold storage, tilted slightly back. Hinges reversed on site have to be put back in the positions the manual shows, with every shim and cam where it was. A panel-ready door carries the weight of a cabinet panel, which has to be within the weight the hinges are made for and mounted at the right height. A dish care machine's door springs are set for its own door, and a heavy custom panel needs them adjusted. A refrigerator pushed tight into a cutout can have its door swing blocked by the cabinet beside it, and a thick handle can stop a door before it opens far enough to pull the drawers. When a cold storage door does not seal, the unit runs long and builds frost; when a dish care door does not seal, water finds its way out on the first cycle. Most of these are corrected by an adjustment, not a part. A hinge that cracked or a door that bent on the way is a claim to the seller or the maker, and a hinge that wears out later is work for our sister repair site.
The 6 causes, cheapest first
Answer these first
Does the door stand proud of the cabinets on the hinge side, the handle side or both?
Does it drift open by itself, or slam shut too hard?
Was the door swing reversed during the installation?
Is there a custom panel on the door, and how heavy is it?
Does the door seal pinch a sheet of paper evenly all the way around?
Check these
before you book.
Door not closing flush: 5 checks, and none of them costs anything.
Shut the door on a strip of paper at the top, the side and the bottom in turn, and feel for the same grip each time.
Look at the gap between this door and the cabinet doors beside it from a step back.
Lay a level on the top, first across and then from front to back.
Also worth checking
- Open the door fully and see whether it touches a wall, a handle or the cabinet next to it.
- Keep the small hinge parts that came with the unit, and photograph any damage before calling.
How soon does it need a visit?
A door that closes but not perfectly can wait for a visit. A cold storage door that will not stay closed cannot wait long: keep the food cold with a strap or a weight against the door until it is adjusted.

6 things door not closing flush after the install turns out to be, from the cabinet set without its back tilt to a hinge cracked or a door bent in delivery.
The cost guide-
01 lowest
The cabinet set without its back tilt
A cold storage unit level front to back, or leaning forward, lets its doors drift open. The front legs are raised to the slope the manual gives, and the doors close under their own weight.
-
02 low
Hinges reversed without their shims or cams
Moving the hinges to the other side leaves small parts behind: a closing cam, a height washer, a stop pin. The door is taken off, the parts are put in the order the manual shows, and it is rehung.
-
03 low
A custom panel mounted out of line
A panel a few millimeters high or low shows as a crooked reveal against the cabinets. Its brackets are adjusted in height, depth and side-to-side until the gaps match the doors around it.
-
04 low
Door springs not set for a panel's weight
A panel-ready dish care machine drops open or springs up when its springs do not match the panel. The spring tension is adjusted as the maker describes for the panel's weight.
-
05 low to moderate
A door that hits the wall or the next cabinet
A unit set too deep in its opening, or a handle that meets a wall, stops the door short. The unit is moved forward to the maker's reveal, or a door stop or hinge setting limits the swing.
-
06 moderate
A hinge cracked or a door bent in delivery
Some doors will not align whatever is adjusted, because a hinge or the door itself was damaged in transit. That is a claim to the seller or the maker, with photos taken before it is refitted.
